More Than 100 Years of Wild Spain: Our National Parks, Our Legacy

At Pirineo, we believe adventure starts where the road ends—and in Spain, that usually means stepping into one of our Parques Nacionales.

It’s been over a century since Picos de Europa became the first national park in 1918. Since then, our country’s protected lands have grown into a network of 16 parks, stretching from the misty Pyrenees to the volcanic Canaries, and from Atlantic islands to Mediterranean forests.

These are not just beautiful landscapes—they’re living archives of our natural history, places where wildlife thrives and traditions endure. They’re where we test our gear, find our inspiration, and give back through conservation projects.

Spain’s 16 National Parks

Our national bucket list—and we think it should be yours too:

1.     Picos de Europa – Towering limestone peaks and alpine meadows.

2.     Ordesa y Monte Perdido – Pyrenean drama in rock and water.

3.     Teide – Tenerife’s volcanic giant, Spain’s highest peak.

4.     Caldera de Taburiente – La Palma’s massive volcanic crater.

5.     Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici – Lakes and rugged ridges in the Pyrenees.

6.     Doñana – Wetland refuge for flamingos and the Iberian lynx.

7.     Tablas de Daimiel – Birdlife haven in La Mancha’s wetlands.

8.     Timanfaya – Lava landscapes in Lanzarote that feel otherworldly.

9.     Garajonay – Ancient laurel forests on La Gomera.

10.  Cabrera Archipelago Maritime-Terrestrial – Balearic marine paradise.

11.  Cabañeros – Rolling plains nicknamed the “Spanish Serengeti.”

12.  Sierra Nevada – Alpine peaks, rare plants, and snowy summits.

13.  Islas Atlánticas de Galicia – Wild Galician islands with white-sand beaches.

14.  Monfragüe – Raptors soaring over rugged Extremaduran cliffs.

15.  Sierra de Guadarrama – Mountain playground close to Madrid.

16.  Sierra de las Nieves – The newest park, home to rare pinsapo firs.

Why This Century-Old Story Matters

When Spain created its first park, conservation wasn’t a trend—it was an act of vision. Now, more than 100 years later, that vision has become a national treasure, protecting some of the most diverse landscapes in Europe.

Our mission is to help you explore these parks—and to make sure they’re still here for the next 100 years. That’s why a portion of every sale funds projects inside these very landscapes, from trail restoration to species protection.

Your Turn to Carry the Legacy

Whether you’re hiking the snowfields of Sierra Nevada, paddling through Cabrera’s crystal waters, or tracing volcanic trails in Timanfaya, you’re part of a story that started more than a century ago—and is still being written today.

So grab your boots. Pack light. Respect the trail. And remember: Spain’s wild heart has been beating for over 100 years. Let’s keep it alive for a hundred more.
