Exploring Aiguestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici
Located in the Lleida Pyrenees of Catalonia, Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park is the only national park in Catalonia and one of Spain’s most stunning mountain landscapes. Established in 1955, it spans over 40,000 hectares of granite peaks, glacial valleys, and pristine alpine lakes.
The park’s name means “twisting waters,” a nod to its countless streams and more than 200 glacial lakes, the most famous being Estany de Sant Maurici, framed by the twin peaks of Els Encantats. Its ecosystems transition from dense pine and fir forests to high alpine meadows, supporting species such as the Pyrenean chamois, capercaillie, and golden eagle.
Accessed from villages like Espot and Boí, the park offers a well-maintained network of trails, including sections of the GR-11 Trans-Pyrenean Route. Aigüestortes is celebrated for its combination of natural purity, traditional Pyrenean culture, and opportunities for hiking, photography, and mountain adventure.
