Cabañeros National Park

Cabañeros National Park

Exploring Cabañeros National Park

Located between the provinces of Ciudad Real and Toledo in central Spain, Cabañeros National Park represents one of the best-preserved examples of Mediterranean forest and scrubland on the Iberian Peninsula. Declared a national park in 1995, it covers about 40,000 hectares in the Montes de Toledo range.

The landscape is a mix of open plains known as rañas and forested hills, providing habitats for emblematic species like the Iberian lynx, Spanish imperial eagle, red deer, and wild boar. During autumn, the rutting season (berrea) of deer attracts wildlife photographers and nature enthusiasts from across Spain.

Easily reached from towns like Horcajo de los Montes and Retuerta del Bullaque, Cabañeros offers visitor centers, guided 4x4 routes, and hiking trails that highlight the park’s ecological richness and traditional rural life. Often called “the Spanish Serengeti,” it is a refuge for both biodiversity and the cultural landscape of central Spain.

Must See / Must Do

1. Safari through the Raña plains – join a guided 4x4 tour to spot deer, wild boar, eagles, and black vultures across vast open grasslands.

2. Visit the Boquerón del Estena – a spectacular canyon carved through ancient rock, with fossils dating back over 500 million years.

3. Explore the Pusa Mountains – a wilder, more forested side of the park with hidden waterfalls and oak valleys.

4. Birdwatch at the Torre de Abraham reservoir – one of the best places to observe herons, cranes, and raptors.
