Cabrera Archipelago

Cabrera Archipelago

Exploring Cabrera Archipelago National Park

South of Mallorca in the Balearic Islands, the Cabrera Archipelago Maritime-Terrestrial National Park protects one of the best-preserved marine environments in the Mediterranean. Established in 1991, it encompasses 90% marine area, covering around 90,000 hectares of sea and small limestone islands.

The archipelago’s waters host Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows, coral formations, and rich marine life including groupers, loggerhead sea turtles, and dolphins. On land, the main island of Cabrera features coastal cliffs, juniper scrub, and a 14th-century castle overlooking the harbor — a reminder of its strategic maritime past.

Access is limited and strictly regulated, with boats departing from Colònia de Sant Jordi on Mallorca. Visitors can hike designated trails, snorkel in crystal-clear coves, and visit the small museum at Cabrera’s port. The park is a benchmark for Mediterranean conservation, balancing fragile ecosystems with sustainable ecotourism.

Must See / Must Do

1. Visit Cabrera Island by boat – daily trips from Colònia de Sant Jordi reveal turquoise bays and hidden coves.

2. Hike to the Castle of Cabrera – climb the 14th-century fortress for panoramic views over the archipelago.

3. Snorkel at the Blue Cave (Cova Blava) – a sea cave where sunlight turns the water into liquid sapphire.

4. Explore the Interpretation Centre – located in Colònia de Sant Jordi, with exhibits on marine life and island history.

5. Stay overnight at the small refuge on Cabrera Island – a rare privilege to sleep under one of the clearest skies in Europe.
