Exploring Doñana National Park

Stretching across Andalusia’s provinces of Huelva, Seville, and Cádiz, Doñana National Park is one of Europe’s most important wetlands. Created in 1969 and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it covers over 54,000 hectares of marshes, dunes, and forests at the delta of the Guadalquivir River.

The park’s mosaic of habitats supports extraordinary biodiversity, including endangered species like the Iberian lynx and the Spanish imperial eagle. Each year, Doñana becomes a vital stopover for hundreds of thousands of migratory birds traveling between Africa and Europe, making it a paradise for ornithologists.

Access points include El Rocío, Matalascañas, and Sanlúcar de Barrameda, with visits regulated to protect its sensitive ecosystems. Guided 4x4 tours and birdwatching trails allow visitors to explore this remarkable landscape where land, water, and wildlife coexist in fragile balance.

Must See / Must Do

1. El Rocío and the Marshes – a timeless village overlooking the wetlands, where horses walk the streets and flamingos paint the horizon pink.

2. Visit the Acebuche Visitor Centre – the park’s main access point, with trails and bird observatories.

3. Explore the Dunes of Matalascañas – ever-shifting sands that stretch endlessly along the Atlantic coast.

4. Go on a 4x4 Safari Tour – cross marshes, forests, and beaches to see deer, wild boar, and perhaps the Iberian lynx.

5. Watch the sunset over the Guadalquivir estuary – when the marshlands glow gold and birds return to roost.
