Sierra de Guadarrama

Sierra de Guadarrama

Exploring Guadarrama National Park

Just north of Madrid, Sierra de Guadarrama National Park protects one of central Spain’s most accessible mountain environments. Established in 2013, it covers around 34,000 hectares across the Madrid and Segovia provinces, forming part of the larger Central System mountain range.

The park’s landscapes range from granite peaks and glacial cirques to pine forests and high-altitude meadows. Its highest summit, Peñalara (2,428 m), shelters alpine flora and fauna such as mountain goats, griffon vultures, and black vultures. The combination of biodiversity and proximity to the capital makes it a popular destination for hiking, climbing, and winter sports.

Main access points include Navacerrada, Rascafría, and Cercedilla, each with visitor centers and marked routes. Despite its popularity, Sierra de Guadarrama remains a vital sanctuary for wildlife and an essential green lung for the densely populated heart of Spain.
