Exploring Monfragüe National Park

Located in the province of Cáceres, in the region of Extremadura, Monfragüe National Park protects one of Spain’s most important Mediterranean river landscapes. Declared a national park in 2007, it covers nearly 18,000 hectares centered around the Tagus and Tiétar rivers, whose deep valleys and cliffs create a refuge for wildlife.

The park is best known for its impressive bird populations, particularly raptors such as griffon vultures, black storks, Spanish imperial eagles, and Egyptian vultures. Mediterranean scrublands, holm oaks, and cork oaks dominate the terrain, while the rivers support rich riparian vegetation.

Access points include Villarreal de San Carlos, where the main visitor center and several observation points are located. The Salto del Gitano viewpoint offers one of Spain’s most iconic birdwatching experiences. Monfragüe is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a paradise for birdwatchers, nature photographers, and those seeking the wild tranquility of western Spain.
