Exploring Sierra de las Nieves National Park
Situated in Málaga province in southern Spain, Sierra de las Nieves National Park was designated in 2021, making it one of the country’s newest parks. Encompassing around 23,000 hectares within the Andalusian mountains, it represents a unique blend of limestone geology and Mediterranean biodiversity.
The park’s highest peak, La Torrecilla (1,919 m), overlooks a landscape of deep ravines, caves, and forests dominated by the rare Spanish fir (Abies pinsapo) — a relic species from the last Ice Age. Its fauna includes ibex, Bonelli’s eagles, and numerous bat and butterfly species adapted to the karst environment.
Accessible from towns such as Ronda, Yunquera, and El Burgo, the park features hiking routes that highlight its geology, flora, and panoramic views of the Costa del Sol. Sierra de las Nieves combines scientific importance with outstanding scenic beauty, representing the wild heart of inland Málaga.
