Exploring Sierra Nevada National Park

Covering parts of Granada and Almería provinces in Andalusia, Sierra Nevada National Park protects Spain’s highest mountain range. Established in 1999 and covering over 85,000 hectares, it includes Mulhacén (3,479 m) - the highest peak on the Iberian Peninsula.

The park’s ecosystems vary dramatically with altitude, from Mediterranean forests and alpine meadows to high-mountain scree and snowfields. It harbors over 2,000 plant species, more than 80 of them endemic, as well as wildlife such as Spanish ibex, golden eagles, and wild boar. Seasonal snowmelt feeds streams that sustain southern Spain’s agriculture.

Access is available from Granada, Capileira, and Trevelez, with numerous hiking and skiing routes, including the popular Sulayr Trail. Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Sierra Nevada combines natural richness with cultural heritage, offering one of Europe’s most diverse mountain environments.
