Exploring Tablas de Daimiel National Park
In the province of Ciudad Real, within central Spain’s La Mancha region, lies Tablas de Daimiel National Park, a rare example of an inland wetland ecosystem in a semi-arid environment. Declared a national park in 1973, it covers about 3,000 hectares of marshes formed where the Guadiana and Cigüela rivers meet.
This unique wetland supports large populations of waterfowl and migratory birds, including herons, ducks, and egrets, as well as endemic aquatic plants adapted to fluctuating water levels. Its ecosystem depends on groundwater and seasonal flooding, making it an important indicator of hydrological balance in the region.
Visitors can access the park near the town of Daimiel, following wooden walkways and observation towers that provide excellent birdwatching opportunities. Despite historical challenges from drought and overextraction, Tablas de Daimiel remains a vital refuge for wildlife and a living lesson in the importance of wetland conservation.
