Exploring Timanfaya National Park
On the island of Lanzarote, Timanfaya National Park preserves one of the planet’s most extraordinary volcanic landscapes. Established in 1974, it spans 5,000 hectares of lava fields, craters, and ash plains formed by eruptions between 1730 and 1736, and again in 1824.
The park’s terrain, known as the Montañas del Fuego (Mountains of Fire), is a stark mosaic of red, black, and ochre tones. Despite the harsh conditions, some specialized lichens and succulent plants have adapted to survive, while the area’s geothermal activity still produces intense subsurface heat.
Access is managed from the visitor center at Islote de Hilario, where demonstrations show the ground’s natural heat. Visitors can explore via guided bus routes, camino de Timanfaya walking trails, or camel rides along designated paths. Timanfaya is both a geological museum and a testament to the creative power of volcanoes.
